So, you’re on the hunt for the best jogging stroller, and you have no idea what to look for. All you know is, you want the best jogging stroller for the best price. If you’re walking into this market blind, there’s a couple of things you need to know before you make your purchase. Let me give you a little jogging stroller terminology lesson.
Jogging Stroller Types
The running stroller, also known as a “true” jogging stroller, comes equipped with a fixed front wheel and two rear wheels, usually sized 16-inches and up. The fixed wheel tracks straight, and allows for maximum durability when running or jogging. Joggers and runners love the running stroller design. It’s simple, built for a purpose, and doesn’t come with a lot of extra’s. Most running strollers come equipped with a hand brake, parking brake, deep seat for child, a child safety harness, and a running leash. A running leash is simply a rope tied to the stroller and then to you, it’s purpose is to make sure that if you’re running and you let go of the handle bar, it won’t go anywhere without you. They also come with minimum storage, possibly an under-seat storage basket, but that’s pretty much it.
Swivel Jogging Stroller
The swivel jogging stroller comes equipped with a swivel wheel that locks into a fixed wheel. The front wheel is usually smaller than the rear wheels, usually 12-inches. They have all the same characteristics of a running stroller, aside from maybe a handbrake, and running leash. The swivel jogging stroller turns on a dime, and is extremely easy to maneuver in tight spaces. The only way to turn a running stroller is to lift the front wheel off the ground, in other words, pop-a-wheelie. The swivel jogging stroller usually comes with a bunch of extra features, like a parent tray with cup holders, and an organizer, a child tray for snacks, also including cup holders, extra storage, toy compartments, and sometime an MP3 speaker as well. The intended purpose of the swivel jogging stroller, is to be an all-in-one design. Go for a light jog in the morning, and shopping in the afternoon. The locking swivel wheel makes this possible, however, it’s important to understand that the swivel jogging stroller is not intended for serious running, only light jogging.
Then there’s the All-Terrain Stroller, frequently confused with the swivel jogger. They also offer a swiveling front wheel that locks into a fixed position. It’s intended purpose is all-terrain strolling, NOT JOGGING. The front wheel locks into a fixed position for rough terrain only, not jogging. Unfortunately, it’s not always clear whether or not a stroller is a jogger or an all-terrain. The only real way to tell the difference is by examining the front wheel. If it’s smaller than 12-inches, it’s probably an all-terrain stroller. If it offers forever-air tires, which are tires filled with foam rather then air, or EVA wheels, which are lightweight molded plastic, it’s probably an all-terrain stroller.
Best Jogging Stroller
As for the BEST jogging stroller, there isn’t just one. It all depends on what you intend to do with it. If you’re a serious, no frills jogger, the running stroller is BEST for you. The more you spend, the better the quality, and usually, the lighter the running stroller. For instance, BOB has come out with its newest model of running stroller. It’s called the BOB Ironman Single Jogging Stroller, and it weighs only 23 pounds. It’s made from aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, sports a 3-inch travel suspension with adjustable shock absorbers, and adjustable tracking. Some fixed wheel designs have a problem with tracking left or right, this one’s adjustable, so that’s not a problem. It also comes with a padded reclining seat with 5 positions allowing your child to recline comfortably up to 70 degrees from vertical. This running stroller supports a child up to 70 pounds, and its 16-inch road slicks come with aluminum rims and hubs, with stainless steel spokes. Now, that’s high quality, and it’s costs a whopping $409.00.
Then we have the Schwinn Free Runner Jogging Stroller, also built with lightweight aluminum, it weighs 26 pounds and has a weight capacity of 50 pounds. It has an adjustable handle, hand brake and parking brake, ventilated seat that also reclines, 5-point adjustable child safety harness, and sun canopy. This running stroller also comes with a parent tray and cup holders. The asking price for the Schwinn Free Runner, between $110.00 and $255.00.
If you are a “kind of serious” jogger, and you intend to use your jogging stroller for everything, a swivel jogging stroller would be BEST for you. Once again, at the higher end we have the BOB Revolution SE. It weighs 23 pounds, with a max weight of 70 pounds. Includes a locking swivel front wheel, state-of-the-art suspension system with adjustable shock absorbers, adjustable tracking, an aluminum alloy frame, reclining padded seat and safety harness, adjustable sun canopy, plenty of storage, and costs $449.00.
At the other end, we have the InStep Grand Safari Swivel Jogging Stroller, weighing 33 pounds with a weight capacity of 50 pounds, it comes equipped with the swivel wheel, 16-inch rear wheels, adjustable handle bar, spring suspension, faux lambskin seat pad, easy fold, child’s tray and parent tray, with cup holders, as well as an MP3 speaker for tunes. The InStep Grand Safari costs $159.99.
Now if you’re not planning on running or jogging, but you do plan on traversing all types of terrains, the All-Terrain Stroller would be best for you.
